Fresh Mahi Mahi Tacos
Here are a few things worth mentioning about our fresh fish tacos recipe.
- This is a healthy meal, low in calories and fat.
- The recipe doesn’t take long since you can do multiple things simultaneously. Use the fish cook time to chop your salsa ingredients.
- There’s room to improvise. Feel free to use the fish and the rest of the ingredients with soft tortillas in a taco salad or cilantro rice.
- The texture of this fish is ideal for tacos. While slightly firm on the outside, Mahi Mahi breaks into soft flakes of mouthwatering meat.
Grilled Fish, Avocado Salsa, and Everything Else
High-quality ingredients are what will determine the flavor of your meal. Ensure you’re working with the tastiest food you can find to create a culinary miracle.
Mahi Mahi Fish
Mahi Mahi (also known as Dorado) is among the favorite types of fish to use in this type of recipe. Its structure makes it perfect for the oven, so the popularity doesn’t surprise. Feel free to use another type of white fish, but remember you might have to adjust the cooking times. If you’re planning to give our recipe a twist, we advise doing it with tilapia, cod, or grouper.
This spice rub is what makes this recipe special. We use paprika, cumin, chili powder, and garlic powder to make it; the results are unbelievable. When we’re looking to add more heat to the mix, a bit of cayenne pepper does just fine.
The toppings are where you’re allowed to improvise freely. Everyone has their favorite detail, and there’s nothing we can do about it.
Mango or pineapple salsa is what does the trick for us, but if you have something else in mind, we’re OK with it.
However, you should really try the mango salsa.
How to Make the Best Fish Tacos
The great thing about these tacos is that they are super simple to make. The process has only three major steps.
- Season the fish
Cover the fish filets in oil and seasoning
- Cook the filets
Make the fish white and flaky using your preferred method of cooking. Then, squeeze a lime over the filets.
- Serve the tacos
Wrap everything in warm tortillas and serve.
We don’t hide that fruit salsa is our thing regarding taco toppings. However, there are other ways to spice up this recipe and get the most out of it. Here are a couple of ideas to give this recipe a twist.
- For a creamy result, add cilantro dressing, sour cream, or fish taco sauce
- To get a bit more crunch, add diced onions, cabbage, or shredded lettuce
- For more flavor, add black beans, corn salsa, or pico de gallo
- Jalapenos, Chili peppers, or any type of hot sauce will be a great addition if you wish to turn these tacos into a spicy miracle.
Extra Taco Tips
Not all fish are the same. If you decide to work with a different sort, make sure to adjust the cooking time. Also, the thickness of the filets matters. Thin pieces don’t take as long as thicker ones.
If you’re using frozen fish filets, be sure they are fully thawed before cooking.
- 8 6″ Corn/Flour tortillas
- 3 Mahi Mahi filets
- One lime
- 1 tbsp Olive oil
- 1 tsp Paprika
- 1 tbsp Chili powder
- 1/2 tsp Garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp Cumin
- 1/2 tsp Salt
- 1/2 tsp Pepper
Start by preheating the oven/grill to 425 degrees F. Combine the spices in a small bowl to create the seasoning mix.
To remove unnecessary moisture, dab the filets with a paper towel, then brush them with olive oil. Sprinkle the seasoning over the fish and proceed to step 3.
Step 3 – If You’re Grilling
It’s time to make grilled fish. Place the filets skin side down and leave in medium heat for 3-4 minutes. Then, use a spatula to flip the fish and give it another 3-4 minutes. If you have a kitchen thermometer, take the fish off the heat once it reaches 140 degrees F.
Step 4 – If You’re Baking
Find a baking sheet large enough to fit all the filets you prepared. Place them on the sheet skin side down and bake for 12-17 minutes. Or, take the flaky white fish out of the oven once it reaches 140 degrees F.
Don’t waste the fish cooking time, and prepare the tortillas while you wait. Check the packaging for precise instructions.
Take the fish out of the heat and squeeze a lime over the filets. Use a fork to break up the fish into chunks and serve with avocado salsa or your favorite toppings.
Keep in Mind
The filets we’re cooking in this recipe are 1″ thick. If you’re working with thinner pieces, they need a shorter cooking time. Naturally, thicker filets will need more time in the heat.
Make sure to cook the fish skin side first. The results are simply better.
